FOWM #230 Solar Power for Seminary in India

The UBS campus covers 26 acres of land, which includes dormitories, an administration building, chapel, classroom, library, guest house, dining hall, and a mission studies building. The seminary is always looking for ways to improve the school and enhance the learning experience for the faculty and students who live there. One of their biggest challenges in their daily environment is being able to provide consistent access to electricity. The cost for power has risen over the years and much of their annual budget goes just to provide this resource.

Being able to provide power is essential, especially in the UBS library, which caters to the needs of researchers from India and abroad. It was the first theological college in South Asia to offer its catalog online. It also subscribes to many online databases and journals. Without power, many of these services and resources would not be available to students. National churches in India are asking Friends of World Mission to join with them in helping UBS install a solar power system on the campus. A $60,000 system would bring sustainable power to the school while cutting power costs by 65 percent. The gifts we give today will impact India’s leaders of tomorrow.
